This is the premier issue of a magazine dedicated to coffee culture—espresso bars and baristas, craft roasters, coffee carts, all-night diners, even the milk prized by cappucino cognoscenti. Richly illustrated with photographs that are by turns vivid, gritty, and moodily atmospheric, issue 1 focuses on New York City. And although there is coverage of the inevitable and inescapable (Brooklyn coffee houses, beautiful little bakeries), the editors also includ articles ranging from an Ethiopian Rastafarian coffee ritual practiced in a Bronx herb shop to a roundup of and sources on Staten Island for spicy Sri Lankan coffee. Refreshingly non-ironic! We hope to see the endeavor succeed, as they contemplate future issues on other coffee-centric cities such as Tokyo and Mexico City.
Paperback. Color photographs throughout.
