British-born and Budapest-based, Smyth is a contributor to Wine Connoisseur and other publications who believes strongly that Hungarian wine is enjoying a renaissance as the vast potential of the “country’s broad palette of indigenous wine varieties is starting to be properly realized." Released by the publishers of the well-regarded Blue Guides travel series, Smyth’s book offers a regionally organized tour of the country’s viticultural regions, with notes on recommended producers as well as food and accommodations for visitors. It is interesting to see that while many vineyards are planted in areas long known for wine production, because of the disruptions of the communist era they are often not in the hands of families who once tended them. In some cases, that has meant the arrival of entrepreneurs who are eager to try new techniques or return to venerated practices.
