Willan, best known for her La Varenne Cooking School in France and for a number of important culinary reference books, has written a frank and charming memoir of her journey from an English countryside childhood to education at Cambridge, a course at the London Cordon Bleu, and then France and a career that has spanned more than fifty years, more than thirty cookbooks, and the training of influential chefs, cooks, and food writers who have worked around the world. Willan is modest about so much, but her contribution has been remarkable.
