Drift is a smart, well-designed, edgy magazine dedicated to coffee culture. Each semi-annual issue focuses on a different place, exploring the many ways coffee is enjoyed there.

Berlin, the focus of this issue, is “an unapologetic beacon of innovation, creativity, and freedom of thought, making it a favored ground for musicians, artists, entrepreneurs, and, of course, roasters and baristas,” according to Drift executive editor Bonjwing Lee. Of particular note is kiezkultur or neighborhood culture, which favors local businesses in the face of growing pressure from larger companies.

This issue includes:

  • The connection between coffee and Berliners’ love of kuchen–cake–that is so strong that while stores must close on Sundays, coffee shops and bakeries can stay open
  • A survey of the Berlin roasting scene that suggests comparisons to the German luxury car industry
  • A guide to a new generation of bakeries in the city
  • A history of Jewish coffee consumption in Europe, Prussia, and Berlin

Photography is a significant part of the magazine, showcasing both people and places, as well as the occasional kuchen or darkly-filled cup.

Paperback. Black-and-white and color photographs throughout.
