This charming collection of Syrian-Jewish recipes is a wonderful example of a thoughtfully composed family cookbook that could easily stand as a model for anyone contemplating such a task. Organized around recipes drawn primarily from Abadi’s Aleppo-born grandmother, the book is rich with personal stories, fond remembrances, and well-written recipes that help distinguish Syrian-Jewish cuisine from the many other types of eastern Mediterranean cooking. Abadi, a food writer as well as a graphic designed and illustrator, includes useful historical references as well, placing both the food and her family in fascinating context.
