Each of the nearly 80 recipes in the newest book from the proprietors of Brooklyn’s Baked bakeshop is associated with a holiday or special occasion of some sort. The fact that among those occasions are Eleanor Roosevelt’s birthday, National Wine Day, and Election Day suggests that these guys are just looking for an excuse to sweeten up. As with their earlier books, the recipes have a hip-and-homey playfulness: chai spiced trifle with mixed berries for the Queen’s birthday in June; Gonzo Cake, or purple velvet cake with cream cheese frosting for Hunter S. Thompson’s birthday; and for Christmas, an Italian tricolor cake inspired by the rainbow cookies so common in NYC’s Italian bakeries. Plenty of fun.
