This is a very sweet example of the kind of single-subject recipe collections popular in late Victorian times and often favored as gifts. Published in 1882 by Scribners, this little book announces proudly on its cover: “40 Puddings + 10 Sauces= Price 50 cents.” And it does deliver what it promises—from Baked Blueberry Pudding to Oxford Pudding (made with tart apples), along with a battery of mix-and-match sauces, from Madeira to Snow Drift (melted butter, beaten with sugar until it turns white and fluffy).
An oblong (7” x 4”) hardcover, paper over boards with a cloth spine, the book is a good find. Our copy, a first edition, which we would classify as Good, has clearly been well used; the covers are somewhat rubbed, but the sewn binding is intact and fully attached to the case. There are cooking stains on a few pages, but they are not defacing in any way. Over-all, the copy is highly acceptable for a collector.
