Peter Gethers was one of those people who loved to eat but somehow never managed to learn to cook. But when the time came to give his aging mother a grand celebration, he decided he wanted to prepare the food himself. So began a moving, often funny, adventure in acquiring the skills he needed. Some he gained through practice, others in hours spent visiting with his mother and listening to her stories of the people she had cooked for, the tips she had learned from them, and the things she valued most in a shared meal. When the time came at last to throw the party for her and for her friends, he realized he had learned much more than how to boil water.
