The Wet and the Dry: A Drinker's Journey

A world tour exploring cultural attitudes toward alcohol and drinking sounds a bit like an excuse for a luxury binge. But Osborne, author of the thoughtful and surprising The Accidental Connoisseur, is intrigued by the contrast between worldviews in which alcohol is celebrated and those in which it scorned. Although he clearly enjoys booze himself, his reflective efforts to explore different approaches take him from Lebanese vineyards to a subterranean bar in Islamabad to a dive called Montero’s on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, as well as many other places.
Beautifully written and thought-provoking.
