Le Sud: Recipes from Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

An appealing survey of the food of southeastern France, where the country abuts the Mediterranean and Italy, Le Sud is the work of an American expat who has long lived in France.
There is an undeniable romance to both the photography and Peppler’s writing, whether we’re treated to images of the Riviera seashore, street scenes, or villas and rustic cottages.
It’s easy to find well-rendered familiar recipes for the likes of tapenade and pissaladiere, but Peppler is deliberate about wandering off the beaten path. For instance, beurre pommade, a blend of anchovies, garlic, lemon zest, bread crumbs and a remarkable amount of butter: you can serve this with crudités or crusty bread. Haricots verts with shallots, capers, and preserved lemon are another nice touch, as is a gateau made with strawberries soaked in rosé wine.
A good introduction for those who don’t know this part of the world well, and a fresh take for more experienced hands.
