My (Half) Latinx Kitchen: Half Recipies, Half Stories, All Latin American

A semi-autobiographical cookbook featuring the cuisines of the people who shaped the author's life as she grew up half-Korean and half-Ecuadorian in a complicated family- moving between her mom, grandparents, and foster families in South Florida.
These relationships and stories about them serve as introduction to each chapter-- an Ecuadorian chapter describing her father's life, her Mexican (step) grandmother's impact, and memories from a Cuban foster family whose role she only discovered years later.
Each section features the kind of classic home-cooked favorites common for immigrants from those regions who are working with the ingredients available here in the US, as well as a collection of recipes that are original to the author and celebrate these influences. For example, Tamales are reimagined by her grandmother as Tamale Soup, and easier method to hit that singular craving, or Okonomiyaki Quesadillas inspired by her new life in Japan.
The openness with which Wright-Ruiz shares her stories is especially refreshing for anyone coming from an atypical family or who has to answer the question 'what are you?' way too often.
Hardcover. Color photography and illustration throughout.
