HarperPerennial, 1993. Paperback. Fine.
Richard J. S. Gutman has been photographing and creating a written history of diners for over 50 years. His obsession began with an architecture degree at Cornell where he wrote his thesis on this American staple, and he continues to work with restoration and preservation groups to keep all varieties of diners alive and thriving.
This 1993 expansion of his book American Diner (1979) reflects a growth in public interest mirroring Gutman’s. From 19th century wooden wagons stocked with newspapers and sandwiches to serve between editions, to the economically-sized “dinettes” of the Great Depression, and to the wave of restoration efforts in the mid-twentieth century, this is a full scale history, accompanied by lots of photographs.
An inspiring work for historians, architects, and roadtrippers. Fine.
