Rutgers University Press, 1994. Paperback. Good.

New Jersey enthusiast (there had to be one!) Peter Genovese is sharply in tune with the beauty of the state's roadside landscapes—the “homemade signs and amusing street names, [the] quirky storefronts and wacky business names, [the] architectural oddities and beautiful country churches…”

Logging thousands of miles on the road in search of those idiosyncrasies for his newspaper column, The Home News, Genovese published a collection of his photos and observations in Roadside New Jersey (1994).

It’s not all about food, but there are standout eateries to catch while traversing the state like: The Kingfish rib joint on Route 40, the Tick-Tock diner with its neon “Eat Heavy” sign on Route 3, or Old Monmouth Candies on Route 33, which boasts the “world’s best peanut brittle”—all of which are still in operation, by the way—though we can’t say the same for others in the book.

A lively and charming dose of Americana. “This is New Jersey as I know it, New Jersey as most people see it—from the highway.”

Our copy is unused and only lightly shelfworn. Issued in paperback only. Black and white photography throughout with color inserts.
