Gleaned from hedgerows, abandoned orchards, and untamed corners of North America, this extraordinary catalog showcases 70 rare and seedling apple and pear varieties—each one distinct and presented for the first time at the 4th Wild and Seedling Pomological Exhibition in Ashfield, Massachusetts. If you're fascinated by fruit diversity, heritage cultivars, or the cutting edge of pomology, this volume is a treasure.

Collected by a mix of passionate amateurs and seasoned professionals, each specimen is accompanied by rich descriptions—covering discovery stories, appearance, and flavor notes—alongside striking portraits by acclaimed fruit photographer William Mullan.

Some noteworthy varieties showcased here include:

  • Biscuit Crisp, found growing at an elevation of 3,300 feet near Walla Walla, Washington: “Flesh medium fine grained, crispy, juicy, snappy, white… Acidity prevails at the front palate, reads like lemon cake and peaches.”

  • High Tide Fiddler, found growing on the edge of Long Island Sound, its roots dangling in salt water: “Flavor complex bittersharp. Acids at front palate are bright and saline, not overpowering.”

  • Boiler Capital Russet, a pear. The original tree is growing near an apartment building in downtown Belfast, Maine. “A complex greenish brown, hazel ground coat with bronze russet covering the entire fruit. A glowing golden-orange hue develops on the fruit in storage.”

A key step in the documentation of untamed fruit, this book is both a visual feast and a scientific record.
