Originally published in 1946, Here Let Us Feast is Mary Frances Kennedy Fisher's collection of great meals found in classic literature, from the Bible and Atheneus to the letters of Madame de Sévigné and Thomas Wolfe's Look Homeward, Angel. The excerpts are, of course, delightful, but so too is Fisher's insightful commentary, which presages the work she would do illuminating The Physiology of Taste in her own translation a few years later.
Another pleasure Fisher offers is the matching of authors from different time periods addressing similar themes. Thus a chapter might include excerpts from Ovid and Rabelais, Boccacio and Aldous Huxley, Tolstoy and André Simon, or Jonathan Swift and Lewis Carroll.
