One of the classic works on Mediterranean cooking, Honey from a Weed is the work of Patience Gray, the author of a very different, earlier, popular book of British home cooking who spent decades living in Tuscany, Catalonia, the Greek isle of Naxos, and finally Puglia.

Gray writes with a casual authority, offering informal recipes that reflect a cook’s knowledge of ingredients that comes in part from having been the gardener who tended them, or the person who built the fire over which they will cook.

It’s an ancient style of cooking and eating, and Gray’s easy acquaintance with venerable authorities such as Apicius and Artusi, to say nothing of Sophocles, creates the sense that one can easily participate in these traditions and begin eating very well, very soon. This worthy book belongs in any collection that aspires to include the classics.
