One of the much-loved food writers of the mid-20th century, Welsh-born but settled in America for most of his life, Idwal Jones (1887–1964) was a spirited epicure who provided his enthusiastic readership with delicious accounts of the good life.
His novel High Bonnet (1945) follows the adventures of the grand chef Jean-Marie Gallois as he leaves his native Provence for the great kitchens of Paris. As M.F.K. Fisher observed, “Everything Idwal Jones writes is charged with a special tantalizing flavor, a kind of exotic earthiness...It is nourishing as well as stimulating...to read...” This entertaining picaresque is no exception.
We offer here a first printing in Very Good condition with a lightly soiled and scuffed, price clipped jacket. A manufacturing error has left some bottom edges uncut. Lively, chatty, and impressively informative, this is the jolly romp that earned Jones his first major attention.
