Proceeds of from sales of this book benefit FIG (originally known as Food Issues Group), a collective of food and hospitality workers in NYC and beyond. Since April 2020, FIG has been coordinating emergency food relief efforts in New York in conjunction with community groups including Ali Forney Center, Street Vendor Project, and Partnership with Children. Kitchen Arts & Letters pays FIG $25.50 for each book sold.
Editor Evan Hanzcor, chef of Brooklyn’s Egg Restaurant, one of many eating establishments in the city on indefinite hiatus during the pandemic, is also a poet and a member of a writers’ group called Tables of Contents, which stages events around literature, art, music, and food. His organization has rallied support from more than 35 contemporary writers, who have contributed recipes and stories to this handsomely illustrated book.
Among the impressive array of prize-winning contributors are Alexander Chee, Angela Flournoy, Carmen Maria Machado, Nicholas Mancusi, Helen Phillips, and Emma Straub. In addition, nearly 20 artists have contributed illustrations to the book, giving it a bright, inspiring air.
